This paper investigates the swelling properties of homopolymer and copolymer hydrogels. Copolymeric hydrogels based on N, N-dimethyl acrylamide and acrylic acid (poly(DMA-co-AAc) as well as homopolymer hydrogels based on acrylic acid (polyAAc) were synthesized by radical technique in aqueous solutions using ammonium persulfate as an initiator and N, N-methylene-bis-acrylamide as a crosslinking agent. The properties of hydrogels examined including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FT-IR. The results indicate that the poly(DMA-co-AAc) copolymer has a high swelling ability in an aqueous solution. The swelling of hydrogels were achieved a maximum degree and diameter of 270 and 63mm in water, respectively. The swelling behavior of these hydrogels was investigated to determine function of the effect of pH and polymeric compositions.
Polystyrene suspensions with an average particle diameter of 0.1-0.25 µm and a narrow particle size distribution were synthesised in the presence of a mixture of surfactants-sodium alkyl sulphonate (E-30), oxyethylated sulphated alkylphenol (AP-9), and organosilicon surfactant α,ω-bis[10-carboxydecyl] polydimethylsiloxane (CS). It was shown that the absence of a highly disperse particle fraction in the suspension is observed only when the polymerisation of styrene is carried out with an ionogenic surfactant content close to the critical micelle concentration (CMC).
<p>Polystyrene suspensions were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of small additive (3% by weight) of polymethylmethacrylate (as stabilizer). The additive is not compatible with the formed polystyrene. Formed suspensions have narrow size distribution of the polymer granules with a diameter of 0.3-0.4 microns.</p><p>The kinetics of polymerization were studied by dilatometric method. There was determined the rate of reaction. Dispersed composition of the polymer suspensions was studied by electrophoretic light scattering. There were found the optimal conditions for obtaining the above-mentioned polystyrene suspensions, which are: phase ratio monomer/water – 1:25, initiator concentration – 2%, the reaction temperature – 70°C.</p><p>Obtained polystyrene suspension particles may be used as adsorbent-carriers of various bioligands (live cells, antibodies, viruses) for visualizing during the rapid analysis and identification by optical microscopy.</p>
