Synthesis and upconversion luminescence of N-doped graphene quantum dots

Abstract: A hydrothermal approach was developed for the synthesis of N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) by cutting N-doped graphene. The N-GQDs obtained have a N/C atomic ratio of ca. 5.6% and diameter of 1–7 nm. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the N-GQDs were investigated. It was found that the N-GQDs possess bright blue PL and excellent upconversion PL properties.

“…The PL spectrum can be regarded as a transition from LUMO to HOMO. That is, when the electrons of the orbital are excited, the electrons transition to the LUMO, and then the electrons go back to a low-energy state [27]. As is known, this is caused by the carbene ground-state multiplicity to the energy levels of and orbitals, which is related to the energy difference ( ) between the and orbitals [28].…”

“…Up to now, many CDs prepared by different methods have been claimed to have the UCL properties, and applied in many fields such as bioimaging and analytical detection [14,54,136,177,190,195,[203][204][205]. However, Tan and coworkers argued that the so-called UCL of CDs under excitation of a xenon lamp should be artificial [206].…”

“…multistep method and one-step method. Multistep methods usually require the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO (rGO), or GQDs first, and then nitrogen doping is performed by electrochemical generation [8], hydrothermal methods [12,13,[15][16][17][18], or high-temperature treatment [11]. Some of these methods need further chemical tailoring to cut nitrogen-doped graphene into NGQDs [11,18].…”
