Carbon Based Dots and Their Luminescent Properties and Analytical Applications

Abstract: Carbon based dots (CDs) composed of sp 2 carbon structures and surface functional groups are a new kind of carbon nanomaterials, exhibiting unique luminescent properties due to the quantum confinement and edge effects. This chapter introduces CDs in detail from their synthetic strategies, morphological and structural characteristics, luminescent properties and mechanisms, and sensing applications. The synthesis methods are summarized as "top-down" and "bottomup" approaches. Luminescent properties discussed inc… Show more

“…The QY was found to be 80%, which means that on exciting the colloidal solution of CDs with 360 nm wavelength out of hundred particles, 80 particles emit photons, which is quite high for the CDs synthesized till present. It is well known that the surface passivation increases the fluorescence. The high QY of the prepared CDs shows that CDs mainly consist of a carbogenic core with COOH, OH, NH 2 and SH as the surface passivating agent . This increase in fluorescence compared to other methods may be because of capping with N and S as well as because of the formation of fluorescent organic species of IPCA. , Moreover, microwave-synthesized CDs create more surface defects, resulting in increased fluorescence.…”

“…The most distinguishable fluorescent characteristic of carbon dots is their excitation-dependent emission. As the excitation moves across from UV to near-infrared, the carbon dots emission shifts in correspondence with the excitation wavelength [ 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 ]. Some carbon dots have a stabilized emission peak even with a shifting excitation wavelength, while some carbon dots possess upconversion fluorescence when excited by near-infrared light [ 87 , 88 , 89 ].…”
