Synthesis and Structure of (Ca,Sr)-Substituted Lanthanum Manganite

Abstract: The phase composition and structure of equilibrium LaMnO 3 -CaMnO 3 -SrMnO 3 samples prepared at 1500 ° C in air are investigated. The results demonstrate that the system contains a broad region of La 1 − x ( Ca 1 − y Sr y ) x MnO 3 perovskite-like solid solutions in which calcium and strontium cations substitute for lanthanum. The solid solutions have an orthorhombic ( Pnma ), rhombohedral ( ), or tetragonal ( I 4/ mcm ) structure, depending on the A-site cation composition and the nature of lattice distortio… Show more

“…For higher temperatures, highersymmetry unit cells have been reported ͑Taguchi et al, 1989a͒. Details of the CaMnO 3 structure have been determined in various laboratories using X-ray and neutron diffraction for, almost exclusively, polycrystalline samples ͑MacChesney et al., 1967;Poeppelmeier et al, 1982;Taguchi et al, 1989a;Taguchi, 1996;Taguchi et al, 1998;Fawcett et al, 1998;Zeng et al, 1999;Blasco et al, 2000;Chmaissem et al, 2001;Machida et al, 2001;Melo Jorge et al, 2001;Moritomo et al, 2001;Wiebe et al, 2001;Rørmark et al, 2002;Töpfer et al, 2004;Bakken et al, 2005;Gil de Muro et al, 2005;Lichtenthaler, 2005;Melo Jorge et al, 2005;Slobodin et al, 2005;Taguchi et al, 2005;Akhtar et al, 2006;Ang et al, 2006;Kar et al, 2006;Zhou and Kennedy, 2006;Nakade et al, 2007;Søndenå et al, 2007;Božin et al, 2008;Moritomo, 2008;Isasi et al, 2009͒. Of particular importance is the result obtained through a joint refinement of X-ray and neutron diffraction data by Blasco et al ͑2000͒. Structural distortions in the CaMnO 3 structure have also been studied by Raman spectroscopy ͑Abrashev et al, 2002͒.…”
