Synthesis and properties of sodium alginate/poly(acrylic acid) double-network superabsorbent

Abstract: A tough double-network (DN) superabsorbent was synthesized by a two-step method using N,N-methylenebisacrylamide as a covalent cross-linker for one monomer [acrylic acid (AA)], Ca 2+ (CaCl 2 ) as an ionic cross-linker for the other monomer (sodium alginate [SA]) and ammonium peroxodisulfate as the redox initiator. The optimized experimental conditions for the absorbency in deionized water were determined according to orthogonal experiments. Unlike conventional chemical cross-linked singlenetwork superabsorbent… Show more

“…The first layer of the crosslinked network is formed by polymerization, while carboxymethyl cellulose is used as the second layer of the crosslinked network by hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals interactions [29,30]. Figure 1 shows the proposed schematic diagram of the fabrication process of the CMC/P (NIPAM-co-AA) hydrogel [31]. The first network was the formation of the integration of NIPAM and AA, with APS as an initiator; BIS is a cross-linker (a).…”

“…PAA/SA was synthesized depending on the means of solution polymerization [31]. Specifically, 5 g of acrylic acid was weighed and added into a 100-mL beaker and then the prepared NaOH solution (25 wt.%) was dripped under stirring into the beaker until the pH value reached 6.5.…”

“…Natural hydrophilic polymers, such as sodium alginate and chitosan, are considered to be good raw materials for hydrogels, but their applications as hydrogels are limited due to their poor mechanical strength (Dragan 2014). The strength of hydrogels can be enhanced by constructing semi-interpenetrating polymer network, for example, by adding poly(acrylic acid) to sodium alginate (Wu et al 2015), or by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) to chitosan (Wan et al 2017). However, the mechanical strength of hydrogels decreases signifi y after swelling.…”
