Synthesis and properties of fluorinated polyimides with multi-bulky pendant groups

Abstract: A new family of fluorinated polyimides with four pendant trifluoromethylphenyl groups was prepared. The incorporation of multi-bulky pendant fluorinated groups and large noncoplanar structures brought about great improvement for their properties.

“…Among these, the polyimides synthesized from 6FDA ( P1C1 , P1C2 , and P1C3 ) have shown better solubility even in THF and acetone. This is due to the presence of hexafluoroisopropylidene moiety in the backbone of polyimide, which greatly suppresses the intermolecular interaction and thereby enhances the solubility even with the solvents like THF and acetone . Owing to their excellent solubility, these polyimides offer good processability, and hence, one can prepare the optical quality thin films from their corresponding solutions for device applications.…”

“…A diamine monomer, 2,2 ′ ‐bis[3,5‐di(4‐trifluoromethylphenyl)‐4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐ sulfone (3) was synthesized by a three‐step reaction using 4,4 ′ ‐difluorodiphenyl sulfone and N ‐bromosuccinimide (NBS) as the starting materials ( Scheme ) . The key step involved the synthesis of bifluoro intermediate compound 2 by Suzuki coupling reaction of 1 with 4‐(trifluoromethyl)benzeneboronic acid.…”

“…With the increase of the ratio of 6FDA to BPDA, the transmittance of the films increased from 14.44% to 69.28%, and had a significant increase, which was five times higher than that of the original one. The reason for this phenomenon was that the steric hindrance effect of the bis-trifluoromethyl group in the dianhydride causes the conformation of the molecular chain to be distorted and the stacking of the molecular chains to be loose, which could effectively weaken the intermolecular forces caused by the accumulation of molecular chains [27,28] . Therefore, the transmittance of the polyimide film has been significantly improved.…”
