Synthesis and Properties of Carbon Nanotube-Grafted Silica Nanoarchitecture-Reinforced Poly(Lactic Acid)

Abstract: A novel nanoarchitecture-reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposite was prepared using multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-grafted silica nanohybrids as reinforcements. MWCNT-grafted silica nanohybrids were synthesized by the generation of silica nanoparticles on the MWCNT surface through the sol-gel technique. This synthetic method involves organo-modified MWCNTs that are dispersed in tetrahydrofuran, which incorporates tetraethoxysilane that undergoes an ultrasonic sol-gel process. Gelation yielded hi… Show more

“…The defective index ratio of D to G bands (I D /I G ) exhibits the linear relationship to the inverse of in‐plane crystallite domains; 0.59 and 0.82 were calculated for the native CNT and hybridized CNS, respectively. Higher I D /I G ratio was achieved for the nanohybrid, confirmed the dense, uniform intercalation of NPs on the surface of nanotubes with minor distortion in structure after the ensued surface functionalization as discussed by Hsu et al 18 …”

“…Moreover, the pure silica XRD patterns in the range 2θ = 10-17 showed that the silica has an amorphous structure. Similarly, the ox-MWCNTs XRD patterns revealed that it has an amorphous phase [66]. For ox-MWCNTs, two peaks at 2θ = 25.4 and 42.5 typically correspond to the interlayer spacing d (002) and d (100) reflection peaks, respectively [67].…”

“…Sonication has been efficiently employed to give silica-based nanocomposites. For example, guanidine acetic acid has been immobilized on the surface of modified Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 [50], and carbon nanotubes have been derivatized with tetraethoxysilane using an ultrasonic sol-gel process [51]. Only a few examples have studied the preparation of Class II derivatives, and an alkoxysilane derivate of thiacalix[4]arene has been efficiently covalently grafted onto silica [52].…”
