Synthesis and potential applications of silver—porous aluminium oxide nanocomposites as prospective antiseptics and bactericides

Abstract: Alumina micro-spheres with mesoporous structure called porous aluminium oxide (POA) were prepared through a hydrothermal method using Al(SO)·18HO followed by a thermal decomposition process. Silver nanocomposites of POA (Ag/POAs) with high biochemical activity were synthesized by sorption of silver nanoparticles in the matrix of POA. Synthesis of Ag/POAs using photochemical reduction enables the producing silver nanoparticles preventing their aggregation. Ag/POAs demonstrated a stronger bactericidal activity t… Show more

“…AlO x and Cu were deposited by ALD and SPU, being referred to as “ALD-AlO x ” and “SPU-Cu”, respectively. AlO x was chosen because of the level of its maturity as a dielectric material routinely deposited by ALD while Cu was chosen because of its free-electron density much higher than that of silver , and gold the two metallic materials commonly used as inclusions embedded in dielectric materials in order to explicitly tailor their optical properties as a whole. Aluminum (Al) could be an alternative to Cu; however, Al was avoided as it was expected to have formed AlO x when Al was exposed to the AlO x ALD process which used water as an oxidizer.…”

“…The ASPs include various hygienic supplies such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant cleaner. ASPs have great potential for killing causative organisms of infectious diseases, including bacteria, as the nanomaterials with extremely small size and large surface area offer high surface energy and more reactive sites ( Gorbunova et al, 2017 , Steelandt et al, 2014 ). In the last two decades, numerous researches have been dedicated to developing diverse functional nanomaterials to meet the various needs ( Hobson, 2009 , Kostoff et al, 2007 ).…”

“…Such materials could present new advantageous properties, as well as increases in the biocidal activity. One of the promising class of materials, which can be used as a silver-containing matrix, is the group of porous low temperature activated alumina oxides, shaped as particulated adsorbents [35,36]. The use of silver based materials or the high silver loaded nanoparticles compounds, acting as antibacterial and antimicrobial agents has a powerful impact factor in the recent designed technologies for removal of pollutants from toxic natural or industrial sources [31].…”
