Synthesis and performance of new modified reactive flame-retardant alkyd resin based on tetrabromophthalic anhydride as varnish for surface coatings

Abstract: There exist two distinct approaches to achieving flame retardancy in polymers, namely the additive type and the reactive type. In this case, new modified reactive flame-retardant (FR) alkyd resins (short, medium, and long oil alkyd) were produced by means of a condensation polymerization reaction between a linseed oil fatty acid and glycerol, to produce the monoglyceride as the ingredient source of the polyol used. This then reacted with phthalic anhydride, which was partially replaced with tetrabromophthalic … Show more

“…Therefore, in recent years, flame retardants are incorporated in polyurethane (PU) to improve its flame retardancy [4][5][6]. Both, additive and reactive flame retardants are incorporated to impart flame retardant properties to the polyurethanes [7][8][9][10]. Various additive flame retardants such as boric compounds [11], aluminium polyphosphate, triphenyl phosphate [12], triethyl phosphate [13], layered silicate [14] expandable graphite [15], melamine and its derivatives [16] were extensively used in the past to improve its flame retardancy.…”

“…This is clearly a positive outcome that can be credited to the added substance structure which (arranged the Co and Ni complexes) contain numerous aromatic rings and Co and Ni in its chemical structure and which enhancing the Gloss estimation of the covered movies and furthermore the metal complexes had been found can improve the estimation of this test. [17] Also, may be due to the percent of oil content in the alkyd component and the poly volume, concentration was 2: 1 alkyd binder to pigment concentration which had been used in the paint formulation. Also, it was noticed from tabulated results in Table 4 and Figure 4 that the scratch hardness had been modified and recorded grade from >2 to >3 kg with the presence of Co and Ni metal complexes compare with blank formulation (AH2).…”

“…The type of flame retardant for PU depends on the application and rules that govern that application. Halogenated flame retardants are commonly used for rigid foams, and include tetrabromophthalic anhydride, aliphatic chlorine, tetrabromophthalate, and 2,3-dibromo-2-butene-1,4-diol [16,25,30] .…”
