Synthesis and Nonisothermal Crystallization Kinetics of Poly(Butylene Terephthalate-co-Tetramethylene Ether Glycol) Copolyesters

Abstract: Poly(butylene terephthalate-co-tetramethylene ether glycol) (PBT-co-PTMEG) copolymers with PTMEG ranging from 0 to 40 wt% were synthesized through melt polymerization. The structure and composition were supported by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). All samples had excellent thermal stability at a Td−5% around 370 °C. Crystallization temperature (Tc) and enthalpy of crystallization (ΔHc) were detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)… Show more

“…Therefore, doing further research on the crystallization behavior can be of service to analyze crystalline structures, degree of crystallinity and processing conditions of polymeric materials [29]. Generally, there are two kinds of crystallization processes in polymers: isothermal crystallization [30] and non-isothermal crystallization [31,32]. However, industrial process such as extrusion and injection molding are carried out under dynamic and non-isothermal crystallization conditions [33], and there has been little discussion about non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of TPAE, especially for semi-aromatic polyamide-based TPAEs.…”

“…Figure 3 presents the XRD results of the PBT/AMWs composites. Five characteristic peaks were observed near the 2θ values of 15.8°, 17.1°, 20.4°, 23.1°, and 25.0°, which correspond to the reflections from the (0 0), (010), (011), (100) and (1 1) planes, respectively; this was indicative of the α-form of neat PBT [ 38 ]. At the same time, the intensity of the characteristic peaks of PBT gradually weakened as the filling amount of the AMWs increased.…”

“…The nucleation density increases in PBSAD-5, while the spherulite growth rat When 5 mol % AD units are incorporated into the PBS chains, the crystallization rate declines under the same ∆T conditions. However, the crystallization rate recovers and shows less decline when more AD units are incorporated, i.e., 7 mol %, which is abnormal and different from other copolymers of PBS [19,36] and other polymers [37,38]. Since AD units are not favored in the crystalline structure and preferably excluded into the amorphous region, the spherulite growth is supposed to be suppressed.…”
