Synthesis and Modular Structural Architectures of Mineralogically Inspired Novel Complex Pb Oxyhalides

Abstract: Three novel Pb oxyhalides, Pb3[O10Pb20](GeO4)4Cl10 (1), [O16Pb22][OPb](OH)I10(I,Br)(H2O) (2), and Pb5.5Si0.5O6Cl (3), have been prepared by high-temperature solid-state reactions (1 and 3) and hydrothermal method (2). The structure of 1 is based upon novel [O10Pb20](20+) layers of edge- and corner-sharing oxocentered OPb4 tetrahedra with cavities occupied by the GeO4 tetrahedral anions. The interlayer space contains low-occupied Pb sites and Cl(-) anions. The structure of 2 contains unique [O16Pb22][12+] layer… Show more

“…Bismuth oxyhalides have been investigated as catalysts, ferroelectric materials, storage materials, and pigments [25]. Siidra et al [26] have investigated the synthesis and modular structural architectures of mineralogically inspired novel Pb oxyhalides. In parallel, theoretical works about these compounds were realized.…”

“…It is known that Pb 2+ cations in acidic chloride-sulfate solutions of metallurgical industries can form stable anionic complexes-such as [PbCl 3 ] − , [PbCl 4 ] 2− , [PbCl 6 ] 4− , among others-which can be extracted from a solution on anion exchangers (e.g., AMP or AM-2b) with -CH 2 N + , -CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 , and -CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 3 serving the role of exchange groups [34,35]. The sorption of Pb from acid mine drainage also includes its association to organic hydroxyl and carboxyl, SiO 4 2− , and -R-O-H functional groups [36,37].…”
