Synthesis and mechanical characterization of epoxy hybrid composites containing graphene nanoplatelets

Abstract: The light-weight and excellent mechanical properties of polymer composites have attributed their use in different structural parts in the aerospace and automobile industries over the past decades. In this research, carbon fiber and Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced hybrid composites were fabricated via hand layup followed by compression molding. Effect of different weight percent of GNP (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1 wt%) on mechanical, thermal, and physical properties were analyzed. In comparison to other … Show more

“…The mechanical properties start decreasing after 1 wt% addition of GNP. [63][64][65] In several of literatures, it is well mentioned many times that up to 3 wt% addition of nano SiO 2 mechanical strength increases as up to this percentage particle gets dispersed uniformly throughout but after 3 wt%, it starts decreasing due to agglomeration of nano SiO 2 particles. Therefore, too much addition of nanoparticles is not beneficial.…”

“…Therefore, the impact strength of carbon/epoxy composite can be improved by adding layers of hybrid materials like Kevlar or glass fibers. 29,30 Interlayer hybridization, that is, two or more dissimilar fiber layers stacked onto each other is the most economical and easy way of hybridization. Investigating the stacking sequence of fiber layers in hybrid composites plays a vital role in improving impact resistance.…”

“…Nano reinforced materials exhibit a great combination of properties with multiple design possibilities. As a result of their great potential and applicability in various sectors, these polymer composites are in high demand in both academia and industry [1][2][3]. Several PNCs have been devised and produced at the nanoscale in the recent two decades to develop new and enhanced electrical, mechanical, and wear properties.…”
