Synthesis and homopolymerization studies of vinylimidazolium salts

Abstract: The preparations and characterizations of several monomeric vinylimidazolium salts are presented from the quaternizations of 1-vinylimidazole and 2-methyl-l-vinylimidazole with n-alkyl iodides and with dimethyl sulphate. Although vinylimidazolium salts have been reported in the patent literature, many of these salts were not isolated and characterized prior to their polymerization. From the reactions of 1-vinylimidazole with n-alkyl iodides, a homologous series of 3-n-alkyl-l-vinylimidazolium iodides were prep… Show more

“…3-Methyl-1-vinylimidazolium methyl sulfate, CAS registry number [26591-72-0], was prepared by direct quaternisation of 1-vinylimidazole with dimethyl sulfate, as previously described [17,18]. Hydrophobic 3-methyl-1-vinylimidazolium triflimide, CAS registry number [384347-24-4], was accessed starting from aqueous 3-methyl-1-vinylimidazolium methyl sulfate, [26591-72-0], by addition of an aqueous solution of lithium triflimide, whereupon the target compound is separating as a bottom layer from the reaction mixture [19,20].…”

“…21,37,38 They observed that the solution behavior of the as-synthesized polymers was directly related to the length scale of the alkyl chains. After the polymerization, the polymers were fairly water-soluble for short alkyl (methyl and propyl) chains and totally insoluble for the intermediate alkyl (hexyl and heptyl) chains; interestingly, for even longer alkyl (decyl and hexadecyl) chains, a stable dispersion together with 30 wt % of precipitate was obtained.…”

“…Polymerized ionic liquids.-Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs), while being first synthesized by Salamone at 1973, 115 can be related to a new class of functional materials for polymer electrolytes. Incorporating of ionic liquid (IL) into the backbone or side groups of polymers presents an opportunity to combine the intrinsic high ionic conductivity of ionic liquids (IL) and mechanical properties of polymers.…”
