Synthesis and general properties of silated-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in prospect of biomedical use

Abstract: Synthesis of grafting silane on a hydro soluble cellulose ether (HPMC) was described. In alkaline medium, this derivate is under gel form. With a decrease of the pH, a self-hardening occurs due to the silanol condensation. For potential biomedical use, we described the silated HPMC synthesis, the gel behavior after steam sterilization and the parameters of the silanol condensation i.e. pH, silane percentage ant temperature. Minimum kinetic of the condensation was observed for pH between 5.5 and 6.5 . So temper… Show more

“…In general, the crosslinking kinetics depend on temperature and pH . In this study [8 ] we showed, at a fixed pH and temperature, the influence of dilution. A dependence of final concentration of HPMC-Si hydrogel on crosslinking kinetics and viscoelastic properties was observed.…”

“…The limiting pH of ' − − + [9 ] sodium silanolate stabilization is approximately 12.1~12.2, below which sodium silanolates transform into silanols ( SiOH) . These − [8 ] lasts can undergo condensation reactions, forming a three-dimensional network of the HPMC-Si chains ( ). The first synthesis of Fig.…”

“…In an analogous manner to CMC, other cellulose ethers or esters have been used as a basis for forming hydrogels, either alone or in combination with other polymers (Harsh and Gehrke 1991;Oppermann 1995;Kabra et al 1998;Bourges et al 2002;Wach et al 2002;Lionetto et al 2003;Demitri et al 2008;Joshi et al 2008;Dai and Kadla 2009;Bao et al 2012). Bao et al (2012) observed higher absorbency in superabsorbents made from graft copolymers of CMC, in comparison with graft copolymers from hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, and hydroxyethyl cellulose.…”
