A fundamental issue in biomedical and environmental sciences is the development of sensitive and robust sensors able to probe the analyte of interest, under physiological and pathological conditions or in environmental samples, and with very high spatial resolution. In this work, novel hybrid organic fibers that can effectively report the analyte concentration within the local microenvironment are reported. The nanostructured and flexible wires are prepared by embedding fluorescent pH sensors based on seminaphtho‐rhodafluor‐1‐dextran conjugate. By adjusting capsule/polymer ratio and spinning conditions, the diameter of the fibers and the alignment of the reporting capsules are both tuned. The hybrid wires display excellent stability, high sensitivity, as well as reversible response, and their operation relies on effective diffusional kinetic coupling of the sensing regions and the embedding polymer matrix. These devices are believed to be a powerful new sensing platform for clinical diagnostics, bioassays and environmental monitoring.

Polyelectrolyte (PE) and nanocomposite (NC) microcapsules fabricated by layer‐by‐layer technique have been of great interest in the past decade as novel entities for cargo encapsulation and delivery as well as for diagnostic purposes. The unique physicochemical properties of polymers and inorganic nanoparticles used in layer‐by‐layer synthesis of PE and NC microcapsules make them promising in various fields, such as storage, catalysis, cells imaging, controlled drug release, and targeted drug delivery. However, the requirement of the cargo encapsulation is that the cargo should have a relatively large molecular weight in order to avoid the leakage from the capsules. In this review, recent progress in the design and functionalization of PE and NC microcapsules using sol–gel method for storage of small cargos have been presented. Moreover, various remote exposures on the permeability of organic/inorganic composite microcapsule shells such as ultrasound, magnetic field gradient, laser, and microwave radiation have been observed. Finally, the description and discussion of the new trends and perspectives for improved functionality of PE microcapsules are the major topic of this progress report.

Raman mapping is becoming a very useful tool in investigating cells and cellular components, as well as bioactive molecules intracellularly. In this study, we have encapsulated beta-carotene using a layer-by-layer technique, as a way to enhance its stability and bioavailability. Further, we have used Raman mapping to characterize the as-obtained capsules and monitor their uptake by the human retinal epithelial D407 cells. We were able to successfully map the beta-carotene distribution inside the capsules, to localize the capsules intracellularly, and distinguish between capsules and other cellular components.
