Synthesis and evaluation of collagen–chitosan–hydroxyapatite nanocomposites for bone grafting

Abstract: Incorporation of hydroxyapatite (HA) into the matrix of collagen (Col) and chitosan (Chi) by in situ synthesis was introduced to prepare nanocomposites. Structural investigations of the pure Col-Chi mixture validated the influence of Chi on Col assembly, but the molecular interactions between Col and Chi was partially depressed during the intervention of in situ HA synthesis, as revealed by FTIR and DSC analyses. A series of Col-Chi-HA (CCHA) nanocomposites with varying HA content were thereby prepared by a se… Show more

“…Collagen as one of the most widely used biologically-derived biomaterials has low its immunogenicity and good affinity to cells. Having been safely used in medical fields for decades, collagen-based biomaterials are now well documented in developing various ECM analogues [8,[12][13][14][15][16]. The wide use of other biologically-derived proteins for this purpose also includes fibrin [12], silk fibroin [17] and elastin [18].…”

“…A composite of HA and COL, the main components of bone, would be expected to have good bone-tissue reactions. Many researchers have therefore prepared HA/COL composites [4][5][6][7][8]. However, phosphatidylserine (PS) is an important component of cell velum lipid, and plays a key role in tissue development, repair, and function.…”
