Synthesis and characterization of silica gel from Lapindo volcanic mud with ethanol as a cosolvent for desiccant applications

Abstract: The high amount of silica in the local materials of Lapindo volcanic mud from a natural disaster has been extracted as silica gel. The presence of ethanol as a cosolvent generated a unique textural property useful for desiccant applications.

“…The characteristic absorption peak at 960 cm –1 arises from the stretching vibrations of Si–OH, while the peak at 798 cm –1 is induced by the symmetric stretching vibrations of Si–O–Si bonds. These distinct peaks confirm the presence of silicon dioxide, indicating the successful synthesis of silanol-rich nano SiO 2 through the sol–gel method . In comparison to HOSIOH, 3NSI16W exhibits a dual peak at 3410 cm –1 , providing evidence for the presence of amino groups and the grafting of DET3.…”

“…These distinct peaks confirm the presence of silicon dioxide, indicating the successful synthesis of silanol-rich nano SiO 2 through the sol−gel method. 21 In comparison to HOSIOH, 3NSI16W exhibits a dual peak at 3410 cm −1 , providing evidence for the presence of amino groups and the grafting of DET3. The characteristic absorption peaks at 2930 and 2850 cm −1 arise from the −CH 2 and −CH 3 groups in both DET3 and KH-1631.…”

“…At 100 °C, the weight loss was calculated, indicating that the evaporation of physically adsorbed water takes place at that temperature. 47 The modified MPS showed outstanding moisture adsorption capacity as the NaCl concentration increased from 0 to 0.125 and 0.25 g g −1 SiO 2 . However, at concentrations above 0.25 g g −1 SiO 2 , the adsorption ability slightly decreased.…”

“…[31][32][33][34] Consequently, the water desorption and adsorption properties of these materials have been the focus of signicant scrutiny. 35,36 Variable temperature infrared spectroscopy was employed to monitor silica gel sample changes while heating and cooling at 2 °C min −1 . Because sample temperatures were restricted to 150 °C, studies focus on characterizing silica gel infrared spectrum changes resulting from dehydration and re-hydration.…”
