Synthesis and Characterization of Poly[oxy(ω,ω,ω‐trifluoroalkylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene]s: Effect of Terminal CF3 and CH3 Moieties on the Wettability of the Comb‐Like Polymers

Abstract: Two CF3‐terminated polymers were synthesized by polymer analogous reactions in order to study the effect of the terminal CF3 groups on their surface properties. ESCA and NEXAFS showed that they contain highly ordered side chains oriented perpendicularly to the polymer surface. The CF3‐terminated polymers showed enhanced wettability by polar solvents as compared to the corresponding CH3‐terminated polymers, while the wettability by non‐polar dodecane showed the opposite trend. This was attributed to specific in… Show more

“…Generally, literature shows that the trifluoromethyl group, aromatic rings connected by one methyl group, and also (O) linkages between two aromatic rings determine an increase of hydrophobicity [41]. In this context, Fig.…”

“…On the basis of these solubilization results, we studied the polymer analogous reactions of polyepichlorohydrin using ionic liquids as the reaction media because it showed high solubility in [bmim][Cl] and formed a dispersion in [bmim][BF 4 ] and [bmim][PF 6 ]. Polyepichlorohydrin is often a starting polymer in polymer analogous reactions because the chloromethyl side group can be easily substituted by various nucleophilic compounds in organic solvents to produce polymer systems with important functionalities such as liquid crystallinity, barrier properties, and curing ability 13–17. Polyepichlorohydrin was reacted with thiolate anions to obtain polymers with thioether linkage groups.…”

“…The monomer was polymerized by the nitroxide‐mediated living radical polymerization (NMP) method using 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐3‐(1‐phenylethoxy)−4‐pheneyl‐3‐azahexane as an initiator in o ‐dichlorobenzene. The reaction was carried out at 403 K for 24 h. The primary structure of so‐obtained polymer was analyzed using 1 H and C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra.…”

“…Chloroform was used as an eluent with 1 mL/min flow rate at 313 K. Monodisperse polymethylmethacrylate was used as standard to determine M n . 1 H and C NMR spectra were acquired with a 400 MHz BRUKER spectrometer at 400 and 75 MHz, respectively.…”
