Synthesis and characterization of poly[methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐ethylhexyl acrylate‐co‐poly(propylene glycol diacrylate)] latices

Abstract: The emulsion polymerization of the monomers methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) was studied to investigate the effect of the crosslinkable monomer poly(propylene glycol diacrylate) (PPGDA). IR spectroscopy, NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the synthesized polymers. These polymers were coated on glass panels and cured at appropriate temperatures to study the physical properties, swelling behavi… Show more

“…This is due to the hydrophobic nature of PPG which repels water out of the hydrogel structure. A previous study on PPG-based system reported similar findings [33]. In designing bone substitute materials, researchers must consider the swelling percentage in terms of the mechanical strength of the bone substitute material (i.e.…”

“…Three bands at 1194, 1464 and 728 cm -1 may be assigned to C-O stretching of ester group in MMA units, the C⎯H scissoring vibrations of CH 2 and C-H rocking vibrations of CH 2 (-(CH 2 ) n , n ≥ 4) for EHMA units respectively [23][24][25][26][27]. Moreover, in the 3000-2800 cm -1 , another group of bands is observed, they can be assigned to C-H stretching of CH 3 (2995 cm -1 ) for MMA units and C-H asymmetrical stretching of CH 2 (2959 cm -1 ), C-H stretching of CH 3 (2930 cm -1 ), C⎯H symmetrical stretching of CH 2 (2873 cm -1 ) for EHMA units [28][29][30].…”

“…Although a vast amount of literature is available on various types of acrylic coatings, a systematic data is lacking for understanding the polymerization kinetics of the eff ect of higher acrylates [180][181] on crosslinkable coatings based on methyl methacrylate and their performance on various substrates. Since these coatings are widely used in industries, there is a broad scope for further opportunities of new fi ndings within the framework of crosslinkable coatings.…”
