Synthesis and characterization of new copper(II) complex compounds with chlorhexidine. Part I

Abstract: Investigations on antimicrobial activity in vitro show that all the complexes are active against the tested microorganisms, the complex with chloride being more active against Gram negative bacteria than chlorhexidine diacetate..

“…In the spectrum of complex 1 , two new bands appeared at 1536 and 1392 cm −1 , which are assigned to ν COO (asy) and ν COO (sym) of the acetate group, respectively. The difference between these two bands (Δν) is 144 cm −1 , which indicate the bidentate behavior of the acetate group . In the spectrum of complex 3 , the appearance of the two new bands at 1487 and 1269 cm −1 with a separation (Δν) of 218 cm −1 indicates that the coordinated nitrate ion is bidentate .…”

“…This low temperature range of degradation indicates the ionic nature of the acetate. 20 For all three Ni(II) complexes, the last decomposition step (300-680 °C), strongly exothermic, is related to the oxidative degradation of the chlorhexidine ligand. The residue is NiO and the metal content determined is in accordance with the results of the chemical analysis.…”

“…The experimental mass losses were 10.85 % (calc. 10.57 %) and 20 3, the second decomposition step, with an experimental weight loss of 15.94 %, occurred between 120-210 °C and corresponds to the elimination of two acetate ions (Δ calc = 16.19 %). This low temperature range of degradation indicates the ionic nature of the acetate.…”

“…[31] The non-chalcone bands observed within the ranges 611-630 and 463-473 cm −1 can be assigned to ν (M-O) and ν (M-S) , respectively, confirming the coordination of both oxygen and sulfur atoms to the metal centre. [32,33] The mass spectra of DMATP and its metal complexes are shown in Figure S2. The fragmentation pattern proposed for the mass spectrum of free DMATP is in accordance with m/z of ions produced under electron impact and is shown in Scheme 1.…”
