Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Manganese Dioxide Used as Positive Electrode Material for Electrochemical Capacitor with Lithium Hydroxide Electrolyte

Abstract: A nanostructured manganese dioxide electrode material was prepared using a solid-reaction route starting with MnCl 2 •4H 2 O and NH 4 HCO 3 , and its electrochemical performance as a positive electrode for MnO 2 /activated carbon hybrid supercapacitor with 1 mol•L -1 LiOH electrolyte was reported. The material was proved to be a mixture of nanostructured γ-MnO 2 and α-MnO 2 containing some bound water in the structure, which was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectrum analysis, and trans… Show more

“…Hence, EDLCs with e.g. an aqueous lithium hydroxide electrolyte have become today a crucial research trend, though the literature data on aqueous LiOH as an electrolyte for capacitors or hybrid capacitors are scanty; only a limited number of reports on the use of lithium hydroxide electrolyte may be found in the available literature [20][21][22].…”

“…Amongst these electrolytes, hydoxy and sulfate based electrolytes with alkali metal cation (KOH, NaOH, H 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 ) are among the most explored electrolytes, considering their smaller ionic size, high ionic conductivity, low viscosity, low cost and easy availability . However, the corrosive nature of chloride, sulfate and nitrate (Cl − , SO 4 2− , and NO 3 − ) ions limit the cycle stability of the devices . Recently, Qu et al.…”

“…Then the corresponding CNT modified electrode was prepared by dropping 5 µL of the above CNT-DMF solution onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and drying under an infrared lamp. The aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNT) with diameter 50-60 nm and length 7-8 µm were synthesized onto silica glasses by a low pressure chemical vapour deposition method and then purified by treating with 20%-30% concentrated HNO 3 . 16 The ACNT electrode was prepared by linking the ACNT-silica glass with a GCE as working electrodes.…”
