Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoporous Carbon Carriers for Losartan Potassium Delivery

Abstract: Losartan potassium is most commonly used for the treatment of hypertension. In recent years, new applications of this drug have emerged, encouraging the design of novel nanoporous carriers for its adsorption and release. The purpose of this study was to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbon vehicles via a soft-templating method altered with the use of nitrogen precursors and via a hard-templating method followed by chitosan functionalization. As a result, the materials obtained differed in nitrogen content as w… Show more

“…In recent years, many pharmaceutical methods using nanoporous materials have attracted much attention from researchers to improve the solubility and bioavailability of insoluble drugs ( Foote, 2007 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ). For example, commonly used mesoporous materials include mesoporous TiO2 nanofibers ( Lou et al, 2019 ), mesoporous silica ( Tang et al, 2012 ), nanoporous carbon ( Ejsmont et al, 2021 ), nanoporous inorganic films ( Li et al, 2020 ), and mesoporous tin dioxide ( Yang et al, 2022 ). Compared with other materials, mesoporous tin dioxide, as a metal oxide nanocarrier, has promising applications as a potential pharmaceutical excipient.…”

“…To date, several studies have evaluated the pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics of custom lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated formulations of Azilsartan, [15] Candesartan, [16,17] Irbesartan [18,19] and OLM. [20,21] The clinically popular ARB, Losartan, on the other hand, has been experimentally incorporated into nanodelivery platforms based on nanoproniosomal gel, [22] nanoporous carbon carriers, [23] gelatin NPs, [24] and chitosan NPs, [25] with the latter also being used for delivery of Eprosartan. [26] With so many nanocarriers in hand, the question of which nanocarrier-based formulation confers the highest efficiency in terms of pharmacokinetics/ pharmacodynamics and cost-benefit remains unanswered.…”
