Synthesis and characterization of membranes obtained by graft copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid onto chitosan

Abstract: Chitosan based membranes to be applied on wound healing as topical drug delivery systems were developed by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto chitosan using cerium ammonium nitrate as chemical initiator. Evidence for graft copolymerization of the vinyl monomers onto chitosan was obtained by FTIR and DMTA. Swelling degree, cytotoxicity, thrombogenicity and haemolytic activity of these membranes were evaluated. Chitosan-graft-AA-graft-HEMA showed to be the bes… Show more

“…This is important because when considering our material for biological or/and medical use, it is evidently safe to be used at normal human body temperature 310 K (37 °C) and the compound is thermally stable. The present results are in harmony with previously published data [34,35]. In addition, a tinny inflexion was detected at 323 K (50 ¥ C) ( Figure 5) which could be attributed to the phase change of several crystalline zones of the PCL.…”

“…Another peak, on the same Figure 5 is shown at 262.4 K (¡10.6 ¥ C) but this second is insensitive for frequency and is attributed to the crystallization. “…In the scope of this work, the DMTA data were used to identify the thermal transitions of CO due to the modification with IPD. The DMTA was carried out in the Constrain Layer Damping Mode, following a methodology previously used by the same authors for different materials with high degree of success [30][31][32][33]. Fig.…”

“…During this work, the analyses were carried out in the constrain layer damping mode, which was previously used by the authors for different materials with good results Santos et al, 2006;Ferreira et al, 2006Ferreira et al, , 2007.…”
