Synthesis and characterization of liquid crystalline elastomers bearing fluorinated mesogenic units and crosslinking mesogens

Abstract: Several new side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) polysiloxanes and elastomers (IP‐VIP) bearing fluorinated mesogenic units and crosslinking mesogens were synthesized by a one‐step hydrosilylation reaction with poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane, a fluorine‐containing LC monomer 4′‐undec‐10‐enoyloxy‐biphenyl‐4‐yl 4‐fluoro‐benzoate and a crosslinking LC monomer 4′‐(4‐allyloxy‐benzoxy)‐biphenyl‐4‐yl 4‐allyloxy‐benzoate. The chemical structures and LC properties of the monomers and polymers were characterized by use of v… Show more

“…In fact, the nature of the primary transitions of siloxane oligomers, silanols,68 and cyclosiloxanes68 have been exhaustively investigated by several groups 69–76. It has often been reported that siloxane polymers may have a solid–liquid crystalline transition.…”

“…where ρ ρ ρ ρ is the density of the polymer before swelling; V 1 is the molar volume of the swelling solvent in cm 3 /mol (THF: 80.96 cm 3 /mol); V 2 is the volume fraction of polymer network at swelling equilibrium; and χ χ χ χ is polymer-swelling agent interaction parameter. The volume fraction of polymer network V 2 was calculated as…”

“…LCEs are materials with uncommon elastic properties that combine the orientational ordering properties of liquid crystalline systems with the rubbery elasticity of polymer networks [1]. LCEs possess interesting mechanical, electrical, and optical properties originating from rubber elasticity, and the orientation of the mesogens can be controlled through mechanical stress as well as by electric and magnetic field [2][3][4][5]. Compared with conventional LCEs, cholesteric LCEs show unusual properties such as piezoelectric properties besides electro-optical and mechanical properties because of the deformation of helical structure of cholesteric phase [6].…”
