Synthesis and Biological Properties of Coumarin Derivatives. A Review

Abstract: Coumarin and its derivatives are widely used as scaffolds in the synthesis of new heterocyclic systems. This review focuses on current developments in the synthesis of heterocyclic coumarin compounds. Numerous approaches especially involving nanoparticle catalysts have been developed to get new bioactive coumarin derivatives endowed with pharmacological and biological activities. The present work describes the reactivity and the new strategies using various catalysts for the synthesis of coumarin and its deriv… Show more

“…In turn, Houben-Hoesch condensation is based on the reaction of β-ketonitriles and phenol derivatives, and in the Wittig reaction, coumarin derivatives are formed as a result of the reaction of aromatic aldehydes or ketones with a phosphonate or phosphorous ylide. More details on the abovementioned and other metal-free synthetic strategies resulting in coumarins preparation can be found in a number of reviews [43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51]. The chemistry of transition metal complexes is widely applied in catalysis.…”

“…Coumarin can also be referred to as 1,2-benzopyrone or o -hydroxycinnamic acid-8-lactone. 1 The nomenclature comes from the scientific name of the Tonka plant, Coumarouna odorata Aube , from which the first very simple coumarin was derived. 2 This structure is made of fused benzene and α-pyrone rings.…”

“…The coumarin derivatives have occupied a huge space in pharmaceuticals and also in other areas like cosmetics. [7][8][9] Artekeiskeanol A-D (Figure 1) are coumarin derivatives, isolated from Artemisia keiskeana, a traditional medicinal plant. [10][11][12] The biological importance and their structural fascination attracted us to carry out their synthesis.…”
