Synthesis and antibacterial activity of surface‐coated catechol‐conjugated polymer with silver nanoparticles on versatile substrate

Abstract: In the present study, 2-chloro-3′,4′-dihydroxyacetophenone (CCDP), a catechol derivative, was quaternized with poly(propylene oxide)-g-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PPO-g-PDMA, PgP) to prepare surface coatings for various substrates. The surfaces of noble metals, oxides, and synthetic polymers were coated by immersion in an aqueous solution of CCDP quaternized with PgP (C-PgP). The catechol functional groups that remained on the surface were used for deposition of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the coate… Show more

“…Exploring procedure presented in earlier publications, [ 42,43 ] ethanol and acetone were initially tested as possible solvents for the quaternization reaction. However, these solvents were not favorable for that reaction since the highest DQ was only 68%.…”

“…The coating exhibited remarkable bacterial killing efficiency against S. aureus (ATCC 25923) and E. coli (ATCC 12435) after incubation for 24 h and showed stability up to 60 °C after 60 days in operation. Very recently, these authors [ 206 ] have successfully modified PP surfaces. The catechol derivative was quaternized with PPO- g -PDMAEMA and the remaining catechol groups were used to attach silver NPs.…”
