It is often necessary to tailor nanoparticle (NP) interactions and their compatibility with a polymer matrix by grafting organic groups, but the commonly used silanization route offers little versatility, particularly in water. Herein, alumina-coated silica NPs in aqueous sols have been modified for the first time with low molecular-weight phosphonic acids (PAs) bearing organic groups of various hydrophobicities and charges: propyl, pentyl and octyl PAs, and two PAs bearing hydrophilic groups, either a neutral diethylene glycol (DEPA) or a potentially charged carboxylic acid (CAPA) group. The interactions and aggregation in the sols have been investigated using zeta potential measurements, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle scattering methods. The surface modification has been studied using FTIR and (31)P MAS NMR spectroscopies. Both high grafting density ρ and high hydrophobicity of the groups on the PAs induced aggregation, whereas suspensions of NPs grafted by DEPA remained stable up to the highest ρ. Unexpectedly, CAPA-modified NPs showed aggregation even at low ρ, suggesting that the carboxylic end group was also grafted to the surface. Surface modification of aqueous sols with PAs allows thus for the grafting of a higher density and a wider variety of organic groups than organosilanes, offering an increased control of the interactions between NPs, which is of interest for designing waterborne nanocomposites.

In this study, a series of Co3O4-CeO2 nanocomposites with various Co3O4 loading were fabricated by the impregnation method using cobalt(II) acetate as the cobalt precursor for the treatment of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). The as-prepared Co3O4-CeO2 nanocomposites were thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brumauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD). The excellent reproduction of active oxygen species caused by the high dispersion of Co3O4 crystals on the CeO2 supports was established. In addition, the reduction peaks of Co3O4-CeO2 nanocomposites were found at much lower temperatures compared to pure CeO2, considering their unique redox property influencing on the high catalytic activity. Among the characterized materials, the 5.0 wt.% Co3O4 supported on CeO2 (5.0Co–Ce) was the best system for catalytic oxidation of xylene, along with excellent performances in the cases of benzene, ethylbenzene, and toluene. Its catalytic activity increased in the order: benzene < xylene < ethylbenzene < toluene . Furthermore, the addition of carbon monoxide (CO) as a coreactant permitted to improve the catalytic performances in such oxidations as well as the stability of as-prepared catalysts, even under humid conditions.

Marrying SPR excitation and metal–support interactions: unravelling the contribution of active surface species in plasmonic catalysis

Plasmonic catalysis takes advantage of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation to drive or accelerate chemical transformations. In addition to the plasmonic component, the control over metal-support interactions in these catalysts is expected to strongly influence the performances. For example, CeO2 has been widely employed towards oxidation reactions due to its oxygen mobility and storage properties, which allow for the formation of Ce3+ sites and adsorbed oxygen species from metal-support interactions. It is anticipated that these species may be activated by the SPR excitation and contribute to the catalytic activity of the material. Thus, a clear understanding of the role played by the SPR-mediated activation of surface oxide species at the metal-support interface is needed in order to take advantage of this phenomenon. Herein, we describe and quantify the contribution from active surface oxide species at the metal-support interface (relative to O2 from air) to the activities in green SPR-mediated oxidation reactions. We employed CeO2 decorated with Au NPs (Au/CeO2) as a model plasmonic catalyst and the oxidation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and aniline as proof-of-concept transformations. We compared the results with SiO2 decorated with Au NPs (Au/SiO2), in which the formation of surface oxide species at the metal-support interface is not expected. We found that the SPR-mediated activation of surface oxide species at the metal-support interface in Au/CeO2 played a pivotal role in the detected activities, being even higher than the contribution coming from the activation of O2 from air.
