Synovial Chondromatosis of the Foot and Ankle

Abstract: To our knowledge, this is the largest reported series of patients with SC of the foot and ankle. In half the patients, synovectomy with excision of loose bodies resulted in pain free return to normal function, without recurrence, at last followup. However, recurrence occurred in 3 (37.5%) of 8 patients with subsequent malignant transformation to low-grade chondrosarcoma occurring in 2 patients.

“…The treatment of choice involves the excision of loose bodies and an extensive synovectomy regardless of whether the synovial osteochondroma is intra-or extra-articular (19,20). In the present case, mass excision with extensive synovectomy was performed due to the large size of the mass and the irritation to the hip joint.…”

“…2,16 Histologic examination of the synovium is important not only to confirm the diagnosis but also to detect any malignant transformation to low-grade chondrosarcoma. 2,17,18 The same surgical aim and operative principle may also be applied to tenosynovial chondromatosis, although it is not known whether or not this condition will lead to tendon degeneration or tear if left untreated. 6 In previous reports, open synovectomy and removal of loose bodies were performed through a posteromedial ankle incision and only focused on the posterior ankle and tarsal tunnel region.…”
