Synergistic inhibition of corrosion of carbon steel in low chloride aqueous medium using tungstate as a synergist in combination with N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl) glycine (BPMG) and zinc ions is presented. The synergistic action of tungstate has been established through the present studies. The new ternary inhibitor formulation is effective in neutral and slightly acidic as well as slightly alkaline media. Potentiodynamic polarisation studies inferred that the formulation functions as a mixed inhibitor. Impedance studies of the metal/solution interface revealed that the surface film is highly protective. Characterisation by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the surface film formed in presence of the inhibitor revealed the presence of iron, phosphorus, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, zinc and tungsten in the surface film. The chemical shifts in the binding energies of these elements inferred that the surface film is composed of iron oxides/hydroxides, zinc hydroxide, heteropolynuclear complex [Fe(III), Zn(II)-BPMG] and WO 3 . Reflection absorption FTIR spectroscopic studies also supported the presence of these compounds in the surface film. Morphological features of the metal surface studied in the absence and presence of the inhibitor by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are also presented. Based on all these results, a plausible mechanism of corrosion inhibition is proposed.

The constant growth in the area of metal phosphonate materials is exemplified with rich chemistry and a variety of applications. From the multitude of subjects related to metal phosphonates, we have decided to focus on metal phosphonate coordination polymers as corrosion inhibitors in the present Comment. A plethora of metal phosphonate organic-inorganic polymeric hybrid materials have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and evaluated for their anticorrosion properties for the protection of carbon steels. These materials are composed of a metal ion (usually Zn 2þ , Ca 2þ , Sr 2þ , Ba 2þ , etc.) and polyphosphonate ligands such as AMP (amino-tris-(methylenephosphonate) and HDTMP (hexamethylenediaminetetrakis(methylenephosphonate), or carboxyphosphonate ligands, such as PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylate) and HPAA (hydroxyphosphonoacetate). Their corrosion inhibition performance has been evaluated and some interesting conclusions are drawn relating molecular structure to inhibitory activity.

ABSTRACT:In the dairy industry mild steel is used as the construction material for the effluent treatment plants, pipelines, reinforcement in concrete structures etc. The steel exposed to the dairy effluent faces corrosion due to the microbes. In the present study the role of microbes in dairy effluent on the corrosion of mild steel has been investigated. Pseudomonas sp., Streptococcus sp., Micrococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Neisseria sp. and Lactobacillus sp. were identified in dairy effluent. Corrosion rate has been estimated by weight loss measurements and polarization technique. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) studies were found helpful in investigating the chemical pathway leading to the formation of corrosion products on the mild steel during fermentation. Initiation of pitting corrosion was noticed on steel specimens by scanning electron microscope (SEM). A mechanism has been proposed for microbiologically influenced corrosion in dairy effluent.
