Synergistic effect of phosphate solubilizing rhizobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhiza on growth and yield of wheat plants

Abstract: The present communication is an attempt to explore the synergistic effect of two indigenous phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) (Pseudomonas fluorescens BAM-4 and Burkholderia cepacia BAM-12) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus etunicatum on growth, yield and nutrient uptake of wheat plants grown in nutrient deficient soils in pots amended with tricalcium phosphate (TCP). A significant increase in growth, yield and nutrient uptake of wheat plants was noticed and both strains of PSB interacted posi… Show more

“…These obtained results are in agreement with many other investigators (Kumar et al, 2001, Minaxi et al, 2013and Al-Shamma & Al-Shahwany, 2014. In contrast, Bulut (2013) reported that the highest number of kernels per spike was obtained from N and N+P treatments while the lowest values were obtained in treatments of bacteria and control.…”

“…The treatment (B1) increased 1000 kernels weight by 6.49 % over control. The obtained results are similar to the findings of Kumar et al (2001) and Minaxi (2013) who reported 1000 grain weight increasing over control due to the inoculation of phosphate solubilizing bacteria. Also, Al-Shamma and Al-Shahwany (2014) showed that, the combination of biofertilizer and 100% NP significantly affected average weight of 1000 grains.…”

“…In the last few years, the development of microbial inoculum containing phosphate-solubilizing microbes (PSM) gained attention of agriculturists (Fasim et al 2002). Application of PSM, either individually or in combined form, remained successful for increasing yield of soybean, maize, wheat, mung bean and chickpea (Hameeda et al 2008, Jha et al 2011, Singh and Prakash 2012and Minaxi et al 2013. Sharma et al (2013) observed increased germination, root and shoot length, fresh weight and proline content of chickpea seedlings by Bacillus sp.…”
