Synchronization between embryo development and endometrium is a contributing factor for rescue ICSI outcome

Abstract: Recent evidence shows that the outcome of rescue intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is unsatisfactory on account of a poor clinical pregnancy rate. These outcomes may be due to either the in-vitro ageing of cultured oocytes before ICSI or the asynchrony between the embryo developmental stage and the endometrial secretory pattern. To address the latter issue, this study performed a retrospective analysis of 534 fresh cycles after rescue ICSI and 64 frozen-thawed cycles in subsequent treatment. Rescue ICSI … Show more

“…If there were less than six embryos cultured to the blastocyst stage, blastocyst vitrification was done if a blastocyst formed. The slow-freezing and vitrification protocols were performed by standard procedures, as described elsewhere (9,10). For evaluation of the ability of cleavage-stage 0PN embryos to grow into a blastocyst, the study compared blastulation and transferable blastocyst rates between supernumerary cleavage-stage 0PN and 2PN embryos.…”

“…Vitrification freezing is an Comparison of fresh and vitrification frozen-thawed ET Zheng et al 171 important development in reproductive medicine and is currently widely used [18]. Thus far, studies comparing fresh and frozen-thawed cycles are scarce [16,17], especially those that include vitrification frozen-thawed rescue ICSI cycles. In 2010, Sermondade et al [16] compared the clinical outcome of 15 fresh and five frozen-thawed ET cycles following rescue ICSI.…”

“…Although some studies [16,17] have compared the clinical outcomes of fresh and frozen-thawed ET cycles, it is still unclear when rescue ICSI should be performed and how its outcome can be improved. To explore these issues, we retrospectively analyzed 194 rescue ICSI cycles performed after total or near-total fertilization failure, including fresh and vitrification frozen-thawed ET cycles.…”

“…Both embryo and endometrial development have to be synchronized in FT embryo transfer cycles in order to maximize the pregnancy rate (9). This synchronization can be achieved in several ways.…”
