Symmetry breaking patterns in 3HDM

Abstract: An attractive feature of New Physics models with multiple Higgs fields is that they are equipped with discrete symmetry groups in the Higgs and flavour sectors. These symmetry groups are often broken at the global minimum of the Higgs potential, either completely or to a proper subgroup, with certain phenomenological consequences. Here, we systematically explore these symmetry breaking patterns in the scalar sector of the three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM). We use the full list of discrete symmetry groups allowe… Show more

“…Scenarios incorporating a second Higgs doublet are of course highly popular in the literature [4,5]. Of late models with three scalar weak doublets have also been gaining interest [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14], as they can provide dark matter (DM) candidates [13] and/or an important ingredient for the mechanism that generates neutrino mass [14].…”

“…Models with three Higgs doublets have been of interest in their own right and have been examined from various angles [9][10][11]. The scalar spectrum of such models with possible discrete and continuous symmetries have been investigated in [12] while the potential minima and CP-violation options have been examined in [13,14].…”

“…refs. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]). While retaining most of the features of 2HDMs, 3HDMs can offer explanations to yet unexplained features of the SM with predictions testable in the current collider measurements.…”

“…The model has a U(1) X × U(1) Z global symmetry constraining its scalar potential. This symmetry is the biggest abelian symmetry not leading to additional accidental symmetries in a 3HDM [5,12,13]. As a consequence, in the limit of one VEV being much larger than the other two, we can derive simple analytical formulas for masses and mixing matrices in the scalar sector and readily understand the features of the model and its physical consequences.…”
