Large cardamom, an important cash crop from eastern Nepal with significant potential in international trade, is facing challenges in terms of its production and market price. This study aims to document the perception of local farmers of Ilam district in regard to decreased production of large cardamom. First hand data were obtained through visiting the households of farmers and observing and documenting their daily chores for cardamom farming. Questionnaires were developed and were used in individual interviews (77), focus group discussions (4), and key informant interviews (5). The SWOT analysis revealed that the large cardamom farming possesses significant strengths, including high market price and minimum investment in terms of labor and fertilizer. However, it also faces notable weaknesses, such as vulnerability to diseases and environmental stresses. These strengths and weaknesses present several opportunities, including crop diversification, search for disease-resistant and superior varieties, and the adoption of scientific farming. On the other hand, the major threats encountered were the risk of uncertain return due to market price fluctuations, government oversight, lack of technical and scientific support, and vulnerability due to lack of skilled manpower and resources causing farmers to abandon large cardamom farming.

Despite the significant role of cocoa in the economy, cocoa farmers well-being remains low. The current cocoa production process concentrates on downstream activities, primarily procuring raw materials without processing or fermentation, which results in a lack of added value in the supply chain. Smallholder plantations contribute the most to cocoa production but face obstacles due to limited knowledge, technology, and institutional support. Government initiative programs aimed at enhancing cocoa’s export potential suggest integrating sustainability aspects into the cocoa supply chain. East Java, with regions and potential for cocoa plantations, becomes a prospective province to apply the cocoa sustainability concept. Conducting studies to understand the potential, opportunities, risks, and threats within the cocoa supply chain is needed. The main objective of this study is to identify the potential and strengths within the cocoa supply chain while addressing weaknesses and anticipating threats. The results show in the SWOT analysis, that 8 variables were strengths, 14 variables were weaknesses, 9 variables were opportunities, and 10 variables were threats. The classification of variables in SWOT analysis shows that farmer actors have higher weaknesses and threats. So that risk identification for farmer actors is analyzed to determine mitigation strategies that can be implemented.

Agriculture for Sustainable Development: A SWOT-AHP Assessment of Ghana’s Planting for Food and Jobs Initiative

The exponential increase in the population of Ghana and the need to meet the population’s food security needs while creating job opportunities have necessitated the implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative by the Government of Ghana (GoG). Using the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analytical tool, we SWOT of the PFJ initiative. We further complemented the study with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) tool to rank the various criteria (factors) identified under the SWOT analysis. The study identified favorable environmental conditions as the highest strength, which recorded 59.3%, followed by agricultural lands availability (21.8%). Inadequate of financial services was identified as the highest weakness (55.8%), followed by over-reliance on climatic conditions (25.9%). High export potential relative to agricultural products in the country was identified as the highest opportunity, which recorded a weight of 50.3%. The One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative came up as the second highest opportunity. Negative ramification of climate change was identified as the main threat to Ghana’s agricultural sector (57.9%), followed by the importation of basic food products (25%).
