The research investigated the impact of environmental factors (temperature and humidity) on pine glulam, oak glulam, and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) elements, all of which can be used in building structures. Elements underwent freezing, heating, drying, and wetting processes in different modes, thereby simulating different environmental conditions that could be encountered during the service period of the materials. Their mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity - MOE and coefficient of damping) were recorded at each stage. It was determined that, in the case of dry construction elements (where a moisture content was between 7.0 and 14.0 %), the MOE increases by a few percentage points with decreasing temperature and humidity levels, and decreases with increasing temperature and humidity levels. The coefficient of damping varied by 20 % - in most cases, when the modulus of elasticity increased, this decreased, and vice versa. Under extreme environmental changes (with the elements being soaked, frozen at -25 °C, and dried at 40 °C), the MOE of the glued timber decreased by 16 % when this parameter of LVL decreased by about 10 %. Alterations in viscous properties produced similar results (the coefficient of damping increased by 50 % for the glued timber and by 66 % for the LVL). This is explained by the partial destruction of the element structure, the occurrence of cracks, and the decreased anisotropy of the LVL structure.

The growing demand for engineered wood products in the construction sector has resulted in the diversification of the product offer. Used marginally in structural products in North America, northern hardwoods are now attracting a growing interest from industry and policy makers because of their outstanding strength as well as their high availability and distinctive appearance. Currently, there is no standard in Canada governing the use of hardwoods in the manufacturing of glued-laminated timber. As part of a larger project aiming to assemble the basic knowledge that would lead to such standard, the specific objective of this study was to assess the shear strength in dry and wet conditions of assemblies made from different hardwood species and structural adhesives. Results suggest that a mean shear strength as high as 20.5 MPa for white oak, 18.8 MPa for white ash and respectively 18.2 MPa and 17.4 MPa for yellow birch and paper birch can be obtained in dry conditions. The choice of adhesive did not affect the dry shear strength of our specimens, but differences were observed in wet conditions. Specimens bonded with melamine-formaldehyde adhesive had generally the highest wet shear strength and wood failure values. Our results also highlight the important influence of wood density on the percentage of failure that occurs in wood and, to a lesser extent, on shear strength. Further investigations on finger joint strength and full-size bending tests will allow confirming the potential for the investigated species to be used in glued-laminated timber.

El aumento en la magnitud de una característica física de la madera, sin depreciar otras propiedades, se considera un avance tecnológico con posibles aplicaciones en ingeniería. Así, bajo la hipótesis de que el densificado de la madera aumenta su densidad y su módulo dinámico, la investigación tuvo como objetivos, por una parte, determinar estos parámetros, para comparar el comportamiento de la madera sólida frente a la madera densificada, y por otra, calcular a posteriori, los índices de densificado, elástico y de calidad. Se densificaron veinte probetas de las siguientes especies: Cupressus lusitanica, Cedrela odorata, Swietenia macrophylla, Tabebuia donnell-smithii, Fraxinus uhdei, Fagus grandifolia subsp. mexicana, Dalbergia palo-escrito y Guazuma ulmifolia. Tanto antes como después del tratamiento se realizaron pruebas de vibraciones longitudinales. Como resultado del densificado, las densidades de las maderas aumentaron en promedio 35% y los módulos dinámicos se incrementaron 46%. Los resultados de los índices de densificado, elásticos y de calidad sugieren que el tratamiento de densificado es eficaz para aumentar la densidad y el módulo dinámico de maderas con un amplio rango de densidades.
