Sustainable Non-Noble Metal Bifunctional Catalyst for Oxygen-Depolarized Cathode and Cl2 Evolution in HCl Electrolysis

Abstract: The composite of polyoxometalate [WZn3(H2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]12– (ZnPOM) with polyvinylidene-butyl-imidazolium cation (PVIM) and oxidized carbon nanotubes (OCNT) as non-noble metal bifunctional catalyst has been studied for oxygen-depolarized cathode (ODC) and Cl2 evolution in HCl electrolysis for the first time. The cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode measurement analysis reveals superior activity of the composite as bifunctional catalyst for ODC and Cl2 evolution. Chronoamperometric experiments show h… Show more

“…Moreover, the synergistic effect arising from the strong π–π interaction between NCNTs and imidazolium cations of PVIM, along with the electrostatic interaction between PVIM and Co 5 POM, which further enhances the electrochemical response through accelerating the electron transfer from Co 5 POM to the electrode surface. 18 …”

“…The CV curve clearly describes the capacitive behavior of the catalyst system, and the double layer capacitance was obtained from the slope of an average of anodic current density and cathodic current density [(I a + I c )/ 2] at 0.975 V versus RHE against different scan rates. The slope from a linear response (Figure 6f, inset) was obtained with a pseudo-capacitance (C dl ) value of 17.2 × 10 −4 F cm −2 and was used to determine the available ECSA of the electrocatalyst by the following relation 46,47…”

“…Polyoxometalates (POMs) are high‐oxidation‐state transition metal‐oxide clusters with a diverse range of properties that render their attractive candidates for a great deal of attention in numerous applications such as energy storage systems, [ 1 ] material science, [ 2 ] catalysis, [ 3,4 ] electrocatalysis, [ 5 ] and medicine. [ 6 ] They also act as electron acceptors in electrochemical sensors, diodes, and chemical reactions due to their multielectron redox properties and high stability without changing their composition.…”
