Sustainable manufacturing drivers and firm performance: Moderating effect of firm size

Abstract: The growing concern of the negative impact of manufacturing activities on triple bottom line has led researchers to embark on sustainable manufacturing study. “…Thus, SMEs also aim to become more competitive by reinforcing technological innovation capabilities to survive and grow in an era of uncertainty. However, it is more difficult for SMEs to link their innovation capabilities to performance due to limitations such as firm size and a lack of resources [4][5][6][7] compared with large firms [4][5][6][7]. “…Although SMEs would like to become more competitive and sustainable by reinforcing their technological innovation capabilities to survive and grow in an era of uncertainty, it is difficult for them to link their innovation capabilities to performance due to limitations such as firm size and a lack of resources compared with large firms [4][5][6][7]. From the resource-based view, firm size is an important resource that influences profitability and performance [8].…”

“…The relationship between policy and regulation and availability of resources and companies' performances is not affected significantly by size of the companies. The results of research by experts in Malaysia showed that better environmental performance was related directly with the size of the manufacturing companies, both in terms of their use of natural resources and their impacts on environmental pollution [15]. Styrene is widely produced by manufacturers as a packaging material and household furniture material, but this styrene waste material has a negative impact on the environment and disturbs living things [4,16].…”

“…Being more prone to stakeholders' pressure (from consumers, shareholders, suppliers, regulatory authorities, non-governmental organizations and public), large-sized firms feel bound to adopt green practices and take green initiatives on a large scale. In a recent study, Roni et al (2017) further posits that resources are generally channelized by firms only if they are expected to positively impact their performance.…”
