Root-knot nematode (RKN) is a serious threat to crops worldwide due to the difficulty in controlling it and the limited eco-friendly alternatives to deal with the biotic stress it causes. In the present work, water-extractable fractions obtained from vermicompost (WSFv), vermicompost enriched with Trichoderma asperellum (WSFta) and T. virens (WSFtv) were tested as biotechnological tools to reduce the impacts of RKN on gas exchange, water use efficiency (WUE) and nutrient concentration in tomato and bell pepper plants. The plants were infected with 5000 eggs and eventual J2 of RKN and then treated with the water-extractable fractions for seven weeks. It was observed that the addition of WSFta, WSFtv and WSFv increased the CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and WUE in the tomato plants. In the bell pepper plants, WSFta, WSFtv, WSFv increased the stomatal conductance, while WUE was higher in the treatment with WSFtv. In fact, the parameters associated with the gas exchange were usually higher in the bell pepper than in the tomato plants. Overall, higher contents of N, Mg, B and Mn were detected when the extracts were applied in both bell pepper and tomato plants. The application of the water-extractable fractions, inoculated or not with Trichoderma, attenuates the RKN damage on the gas exchange parameters and successfully enhanced the nutrient concentration in the infected tomato and bell pepper plants, showing that it could be an important and promising tool for reducing the damage caused by this pathogen. We suggest that both the tomato and pepper plants can cope with the dilemma between growth and stress response via stomata regulation that are modulated by the WSF and Trichoderma.

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the potential of chitosan alone and in combination with various agricultural wastes for the management of rootknot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita on eggplant cv. 'BR-112' under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that chitosan as a single or joint treatment with agricultural wastes significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced root-knot indices, and the nematode population in soil. As a result, of this, the growth and growth yielding attributes of eggplant were remarkably augmented. Chitosan as an elicitor induced plant mediated systemic resistance against M. incognita in eggplant. The results of the study demonstrated that maximum reduction in eggmass/root, eggs/eggmasses, nematode population and root-knot indices, was acquired by the treatments: chitosan + onion and chitosan + mentha. It was followed by chitosan + Brassica, chitosan + urad and chitosan + coconut whereas, chitosan combined with corn cob waste was found to be the least effective when compared to the control. The application of chitosan alone was effective but not very satisfactory. Compared to the control applications of all the treatments significantly increased plant growth in terms of length, fresh and dry weights, pollen fertility, yield and biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, carotenoid content and antioxidant enzymes. This may have been due to the eliciting activity of chitosan, causing systemic resistance in the plant and the release of various toxic chemical compounds during decomposition which have lethal effects against the second stage juveniles of M. incognita and nematode multiplication.

Nematicidal activity of four species of marine algae Ulva fasciata Delile (UF) (green algae), Corallina mediteranea, Corallina officinalis (red algae) and Spirulina platensis (blue-green algae) at concentrations of (125, 250, 500 and 1000 µg/ml) for aqueous and ethanolic extracts were investigated against the knot-root nematode, Meloidogyne incognita in laboratory and greenhouse on tomato plants. In laboratory experiments, all tested algae caused significant mortality of the second larval stage (J2). It was, also, noticed that the tested algae reduced egg hatching. Ethanol extract of all algae possesses highest nematicidal activity than water extract. U. fasciata, ethanolic extracts showed the highest nematicidal activity among the tested algae in vitro. The results of greenhouse experiment clarified that the tested ethanolic extracts of all algae, reduced numbers of root galls, egg masses and population of nematodes of tomato plants at concentration 1000 mg/kg soil compared to the inoculated control. U. fasciata was the most effective treatment in reducing root galls, egg masses and final population of the nematode except for oxamyl. Results revealed that all tested treatments increased various measures of plant growth characters; fresh shoot and root weights and lengths as well as reduced the root-knot infestation. Among all of the tested algae, U. fasciata followed by C. officinalis and C. mediteranea were the most effective treatments to increase both fresh shoot & root weights and lengths. None of the algae was phytotoxic at the tested treatments. A chemical constituent of U. fasciata was recognized by GC-MS. GC-MS analysis, exhibited the presence of organic component such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate which ranked the first with 63.75%, followed by diethyl phthalate (18.46%). Results stated that marine algae and especially, U. fasciata exhibited significant nematicidal activity in-vitro and in-vivo experiments and could be considered as useful natural namaticidal agents.
