Sustainable Management of Eremanthus erythropappus in Minas Gerais, Brazil – A Review

Abstract: We reviewed key studies published so far regarding Eremanthus erythropappus (DC.) MacLeish (Candeia), in order to approach the sustainable management of this species. The objective of this study was to discuss what is already known by the scientific community, presenting the current scenario and outlining the main challenges that still need to be addressed. Candeia is a tree species found in some Brazilian states, being used in the production of fence posts, and essential oils. It aids in the preservation and … Show more

“…Although most exploitation of E. erythropappus follows sustainable management plans (Araújo et al 2018), there are limited commercial plantations typically associated with oil processing companies (Donadelli 2012). Since E. erythropappus is a Brazilian-native species with little domestication, plantation cultivation relies on seedlings with heterogeneity in growth and production.…”

“…MacLeish is a species belonging to the Asteraceae family that is naturally distributed in the southeastern Central Plateau of Brazil, encompassing the states of Goiás, Distrito Federal, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo (Araújo et al 2018). It is found in a variety of habitats, ranging from forest communities to open elds such as Cerrado, rupestrian elds, and high-altitude elds, where it often forms nearly pure stands referred to as "candeais" in Portuguese (Araújo et al 2018). The species is commonly exploited in rural communities, primarily for fence posts, due to its natural occurrence in Cerrado areas and high population density.…”

“…There is also vegetation with a low number of plant species in this ecotonal region in the midst of fields and forests, such as the monodominant forests with trees of the Eremanthus genus of the Asteraceae family (Araújo 1944) (from now on Eremanthus forests). Although these forests occur abundantly in the southeastern region of Brazil (Pedralli et al, 1997) and are well studied by studies involving forest management (Scolforo et al, 2002;Araújo et al, 2018), studies involving the bird community which frequent this type of vegetation are incipient (Carrara and Faria, 2012). The management of monodominant Eremanthus erythropappus and Eremanthus incanus forests was legally instituted in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2007(Ordinance No.…”

“…A produção comercial de mudas de candeia é realizada via seminal (Davide & Melo, 2012), porém o uso de técnicas de propagação assexuada representa importante ferramenta visando principalmente a manutenção de genótipos superiores e a produção de plantas livres de doenças (Xavier et al, 2013). A propagação assexuada por enxertia, estaquia e micropropagação são técnicas alternativas para produção de mudas de candeia (Araújo et al, 2018).…”
