Sustainable education and training in laboratory animal science and ethics in low- and middle-income countries in Africa – challenges, successes, and the way forward

Abstract: Despite the recognised need for education and training in laboratory animal science (LAS) and ethics in Africa, access to such opportunities has historically been limited. To address this, the Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE) was established to pioneer a support network for the development of education and training in LAS and ethics across the African continent. In the 4.5 years since the establishment of PAN-LASE, 3635 individuals from 28 African countries have particip… Show more

“…A modern approach to teaching and learning comprises attention to social responsibility and sustainability goals, including access to quality education and sustainable development through partnerships. 43,44 In the same way that remote technologies allow expertise to be available to different researchers within the same country, they enable expertise in developed countries to be more easily available in the Global South, without the need for continued long-distance travel and its associated resource implications, including carbon footprint. Consideration has to be given to cost and local connectivity, but a combination of hands-on and virtual training means that surgical training is already being delivered to low- and middle-income countries through initiatives such as VRiMS.…”

“…There is a need for ongoing discussions and engagement with stakeholders, including scientific organisations, regulators and institutions across Africa, to encourage the awareness, uptake and implementation of the Guidelines. The Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE), 5 in collaboration with key local, national and regional stakeholders, aims to drive this vision forward.…”

“…The Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Sciences and Ethics (PAN-LASE) 5 was created in 2017 as a forum to develop human resources and capacity for the humane and ethical care and use of research animals across Africa. In addition to providing professional educational opportunities, it resolved to create guidelines for the establishment and functioning of Animal Ethics Committees (AECs), otherwise known as Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs), in Africa.…”

“…By the hand of Bert Mohr et al., 11 we travel to Africa, where the Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE) has made substantial strides in embedding professional education and training in animal welfare and research ethics that embraces the rich cultureal, and political and socio-economic diversity that is Africa across the continent. The authors give their account of their main achievements and challenges, with lessons learned, to enable other resource constrained countries across the world to implement similar initiatives.…”
