Sustainable Design and Building Information Modelling: Case Study of Energy Plus House, Hieron's Wood, Derbyshire UK

Abstract: In this paper the method for sustainable design analysis (SDA) integration with building information modelling (BIM) is explored, through the prism of a complex case study based research. BIM model federation and integration challenges are reported, including issues with combining geometry and managing attribute data. The research defines SDA as rapid and quantifiable analysis of multitude of sustainable alternatives and ‘what if’ questions posed by a design team during the early stages of the project, when t… Show more

“…Autodesk Revit is a commercially available Computer Aided Design (CAD) software that enables the user to follow a BIM workflow for any AEC project. Revit was chosen both because of its widespread application within the construction industry (AEC, 2013; Kurul et al, 2013) and the fact that it is among the leading BIM software platforms in several academic studies (Ceranic et al, 2015;Garcia and Zhu, 2015;Han et al, 2018). Based on the National Building Specification (NBS) in 2014 (NBS, 2014) and 2016 (NBS, 2016), as well as a similar survey conducted in Canada by the IBC in 2013 (IBC, 2013), Revit is the most used tool in the UK and Canada followed by a Computed Aided Design tool (CAD).…”

“…It was concluded that an envelope has to maintain full breathability and allow for a free and unobstructed moisture movement. Thus the final construction of the external wall for the actual build was fully breathable and composed of, from the outside in, 150mm dry stone walling (with a partial bed of lime mortar for stability, but with random air gaps), 10mm air gap, 450mm hempcrete infill with 150x100mm sycamore frame and lime render on the inside [6], providing uninterrupted moisture movement.…”

“…As the hempcrete surrounding sycamore goes through its intermittent periods of wetting and drying, thus changing its moisture content [6], hygrothermal tests were conducted according to ISO 9869 and ASTM C1046 standards specified in [14], [15], recording heat flux and dynamic changes of U-values, to evaluates the building envelope performance and its impact on the sycamore frame. To signify those results, a building envelope performance monitoring of the guest bedroom south facing wall is presented below, covering 3 weeks of typical heating period from 20/02/18-12/03/18 (see Fig.…”

“…It is also observed that some standards and guidelines requested the energy modelling to comply with standard sustainability assessment such as LEED.In the design phase, Asl et al(2015)developed a BIM-Based Performance Optimization (BPOpt) to probe the effects of different design alternatives on energy performance through an open-source visual programming user interface and cloud-based simulation Kim et al (2016). assessed the impact of window size, position, and orientation on building energy load using BIM Ceranic et al (2015). presented an integrated approach that uses BIM and sustainable design analysis (SLA) so that energy calculations could be predetermined before referring to the exact specification of building materials, which has significantly minimised the modelling time.…”
