Sustainable Chitosan-Dialdehyde Cellulose Nanocrystal Film

Abstract: In this study, we incorporated 2,3-dialdehyde nanocrystalline cellulose (DANC) into chitosan as a reinforcing agent and manufactured biodegradable films with enhanced gas barrier properties. DANC generated via periodate oxidation of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was blended at various concentrations with chitosan, and bionanocomposite films were prepared via casting and characterized systematically. The results showed that DANC developed Schiff based bond with chitosan that improved its properties significantly.… Show more

“…The -C=N peak was noticed only for the material composition with the highest DAC content. In the other two materials (20DAC/80Coll and 50DAC/50Coll), this peak of stretching vibration (around 1630-1640 cm −1 ) formed by Schiff base reaction overlapped with the C=O stretching in Amide I [44]. Based on these observations, our results indicated that dialdehyde chitosan was successfully introduced into the collagen matrix.…”

“…When using other nanocrystalline cellulose to oxidant ratios (1:0.5 and 1:0.7), the degree of oxidation was much lower—23% and 51% for DAMC and 24% and 53% for DNCL. Gao et al reported that the degree of the oxidation for dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystals at 60 °C for two hours was 79.2% [ 43 ]. Xing et al determined the impact of reaction time on the degree of oxidation [ 61 ].…”

“…Both DNCL and DAMC have nearly identical absorption spectra. The DAMC and DNCL spectra have the two new absorption bands at 1724 and 893 cm −1 attributed to C=O stretching vibration originating from the carbonyl group and hemiacetal bond, respectively [ 43 ]. The oxidation process changed the position and intensity of individual absorption bands.…”

“…Recent studies have evaluated the use of nanometric compounds for the reinforcement of materials made from natural polymers. It has been found that reducing the particle size of the reinforcing materials promotes more homogeneous dispersion and increases the specific surface of the reinforcements, such as nanocellulose and nanoclays [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Nanocellulose is produced from cellulose, the most abundant polymer in nature, which can be obtained from the residues of agricultural byproducts.…”
