Sustainability practices at higher education institutions in Asia

Abstract: Purpose It is still unclear how Asian universities incorporate the theory or practice of sustainable development (SD) in their research and education programmes. To address this gap, the purpose of this paper is to report on a study that has examined how universities in Asian countries handle and address matters related to SD. Design/methodology/approach The study used a bibliometric analysis and an online survey-method. The online survey data were analysed through descriptive analysis and one-sample student… Show more

“…Implementing innovations in different places might help the development process (Szopik-Depczyńska et al , 2018) and offers solutions to meet the United Nations 2030 sustainable development agenda (Calabrese et al , 2018). From the point of view of the performance indicators used in this research, the findings corroborate previous studies regarding the importance of sustainability indicators (Mazon et al , 2019) and models for assessing sustainability (Pereira Ribeiro et al , 2021a, 2021b) in universities (Guerra et al , 2018; Fuchs et al , 2020; Perdoná and Soares, 2021; Leal Filho et al , 2021a; Leal Filho et al , 2021b). Additionally, this study indicates that GAC not only directly and positively influences GSI, but it also indirectly affects GSI via the partial mediator of GDC.…”

“…Few research highlighted the issue from Asian perspectives (specifically in Malaysia and Indonesia) (Wee et al, 2017) excluding several studies in Malaysia (Harun et al, 2011; Sivapalan, 2017; Yusliza et al, 2020). Similarly, limited comparative studies investigated Southeast Asian university students and sustainability (Leal Leal Filho et al, 2021). From a larger population scale, important misconceptions require intervention through education, information and motivation despite the positive attitude towards sustainable development (García-González et al, 2020).…”

“…SDG deployment at HEIs in Bangladesh is quite difficult. There's also a paucity of sustainability strategies in Bangladesh's HEIs (Filho et al, 2022). Understanding how concerned, interested and eager students are participating in sustainability programs may help contextualize how much sustainability a university and its students are likely to practice.…”
