Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate edaphic beetles’ abundance, diversity indexes and composition dependence in different land-use systems (LUS) under tropical climate conditions. Method: We surveyed three different LUS such as primary forest fragment (FFP), agroforestry system (SAF) and conventional agricultural cultivation (CAC) in Eastern Amazon. The edaphic beetles were collected using pitfall traps, identified to the family taxonomic level and classified into trophic guilds (carnivore, detritivore, fungivore, and/or herbivore). Results and conclusion: All LUS showed strong dominance by Scarabaeidae and Staphylinidae families. The edaphic beetles community is influenced by the LUS, since the highest rates of abundance, average richness, diversity and evenness were found in the CAC. Edaphic beetles’ composition is dependent to natural vegetation, which accumulated richness is the greatest parameter related to natural vegetation. Research implications: No-tillage cultivation, with homogeneous vegetation formed by decayed plant material from the last culture cycle, can improve and preserve beetles’ detritivore trophic guild. Due to the edaphic beetles’ composition dependence to natural vegetation, is important to preserve forest fragments near altered landscapes to ensure better conditions for this organism’s reestablishment. Originality/value: Edaphic beetles have rarely been studied under different LUS with tropical conditions, particularly in the Eastern Amazon. Comprising these organisms distribution pattern after land-use changes is essential for ecological conservation implications.

Objective: Study carried out in the Padre Josimo Tavares settlement project, located in the Brazilian Amazon, to portray the social reality, productivity and agricultural spatial distribution, as well as its implications for the preservation of the Amazon biome. Theoretical framework: The developmental measures adopted in the Amazon region, which include the creation of numerous settlement projects, did not consider the need to conserve natural resources. Currently, it is necessary to boost agricultural productivity combined with strategies that contribute to plant recovery and curb deforestation. Method: Data were collected in the field, and also spatial data were obtained, which were synthesized and analyzed using spatial, statistical and multicriteria analysis to verify the distribution and environmental suitability of agricultural activities. Results and conclusion: The settlers grow various plant products and most of them produce species strongly adapted to the region, which offers a productive advantage. Beef cattle farming is widely practiced; however, it is widely identified as the main cause of deforestation in the Amazon biome. To overcome this environmental obstacle, the recommended and discussed approaches were the implementation of agroforestry systems and zero deforestation commitment policies. Research implications: Knowing the socioeconomic and environmental reality of settlement projects is essential to identify strategies that increase, in an integrated manner, social, economic and environmental sustainability. Originality/value: Use of unpublished data obtained through field collections of the RADIS-UFV Project, the result of a partnership between the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform and the Federal University of Viçosa.

Objetivo: investigar metodologias aplicadas para as estimativas de disponibilidade hídrica superficial e subterrânea em pequenas bacias hidrográficas, com destaque para as regiões rurais, visando possível aplicação em comunidades rurais brasileiras. Referencial teórico: em decorrência dos inúmeros casos de problemas de abastecimento populacional devido à baixa disponibilidade hídrica, esse assunto tem se tornado uma das referências para o manejo e gestão de água. Método: realizou-se uma busca bibliográfica nas plataformas Web Of Science e Scopus, visando artigos que tratassem do cálculo da vazão mínima, escoamento de base, pequenas bacias e pequenas bacias hidrográficas. Foram analisadas as metodologias desenvolvidas nos artigos de forma a selecionar as mais adequadas, verificando a disponibilidade de dados a serem utilizados em cada uma delas. Resultados e conclusão: o método de avaliação mais utilizado foram os softwares de modelagem hidrológica, para as estimativas das fontes superficiais e subterrâneas, resultado semelhante ao levantado em artigos brasileiros. O emprego de modelos hidrológicos foi um método compatível com o uso em pequenas bacias rurais, por permitir inúmeras possibilidades de resultados e de dados de entrada, auxiliando no processo de monitoramento e previsão de cenários. Implicações da pesquisa: auxiliar na tomada de decisão referente ao uso dos recursos hídricos de comunidades rurais, indicando metodologias que podem ser aplicadas a bacias hidrográficas com áreas pequenas, monitoramentos pouco constantes e os dados escassos. Originalidade/valor: a determinação de metodologias que estimem a disponibilidade hídrica e sejam aplicáveis em comunidades rurais auxilia na gestão dos recursos, para que seja possível determinar mecanismos que barrem a superexploração e garantam o desenvolvimento local.
