Sustainability and human health issues pertinent to fibre reinforced polymer composites usage: A review

Abstract: The specific properties of fibre reinforced polymers give them a lot of advantages over traditional materials but the long life of polymeric composites poses serious environmental threats raising sustainability concerns. The other issue of importance concerning the innovators and environmentalists in the mass usage of this material is its health impacts on human beings. This paper thus attempts to highlight and surface out the issues related to fibre reinforced polymers’ sustainability and their health impacts… Show more

“…In contrast, thermoplastics can more readily be melted and separated from the fiber reinforcement, provided they are not contaminated. (Zaman et al, 2014) Companies using FRP composites in residential building construction already exist. Using pultruded fiberglass I-beams, Composite Building Structures Ltd. uses composite materials to replace 2"x 6" wooden members in traditional stick/frame construction (Stewart, 2011).…”

“…Polymer resin choices Resins, fiber type, fiber diameter, and any additives need to be compatible in order to have optimal mechanical performance in a FRP composite; as such, all the components need to be selected accordingly. Thermosets are generally brittle and difficult to recycle, with waste plastic disposed of in landfills or incinerated; both are environmentally questionable practices (Zaman et al 2014). The major advantage of thermosets is the liquid state of the monomer resin phase prior to setting, allowing easy incorporation into the fiber matrix, where it subsequently polymerizes.…”

“…Especially, fiber reinforced composite is a powerful and lightweight alternative to traditional metal and concrete materials [1][2][3]. It has been extensively used for a range of engineering fields, such as aeronautical structures, sports equipment, construction materials, and wind turbines [4][5][6].…”

“…Recycling is the priority strategy from the viewpoints of resource and environmental protection. As shown by recent studies, recycling of GFRP as filler components of concrete mixtures seems to be a good approach . Bulk molding compounds (BMCs) (i.e., GFRPs with a thermoset resin matrix) are promising materials in virtue of their good mechanical, process feasibility, variety, and low‐cost characteristics.…”
