Susceptibility of Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) to Imidacloprid, Thiamethoxam, Dinotefuran and Flupyradifurone in South Florida

Abstract: Populations of Bemisa tabaci MEAM1 were established from nineteen locations in south Florida, primarily from commercial tomato fields, and were tested using a cotton leaf petiole systemic uptake method for susceptibility to the nicotinic acetylcholine agonist insecticides imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, dinotefuran and flupyradifurone. Eleven populations produced LC50s for one or more chemicals that were not significantly different from the susceptible laboratory colony based on overlapping fiducial limits, indica… Show more

“…Florida is the foremost producer of fresh market tomatoes in the USA, harvesting over $260 million in 2017 (USDA NASS 2018). Ongoing surveys indicate that MED has not established in field-grown tomatoes in Florida (Smith et al 2016;McKenzie & Osborne 2017). However, insecticide use is intensive in this crop and insecticide resistant populations of MEAM1 have been detected in Florida tomato fields (Schuster et al 2010;Smith et al 2016).…”

“…Neonicotinoid resistance has been investigated in many insects in great detail for several species including: Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring (Smith, Nagle, MacVean, & McKenzie, 2016); fruit fly Drosophila melanogasler (Meigen) (Daborn et al, 2002); whitefly, western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Huseth et al, 2016); Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Bishop & Grafius, 1996) and the German cockroach Blattella germanica (Linnaeus) (Scott, 1991).…”

“…Serenguetti).
