Survival outcomes after endoscopic resection for sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma arising on inverted papilloma

Abstract: The endoscopic approach provides encouraging oncologic outcomes for sinonasal IP-SCC, comparable to those observed with traditional external approaches while minimizing morbidity for patients. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: 1708-1716, 2016.

“…Often, transformed IPs are difficult to detect preoperatively with in‐office biopsies, particularly if the tumors are not easily visible by nasal endoscopy, or if they have large tumor mass thereby increasing sampling error. Some authors have recommended performing multiple biopsies because most malignancies expand from the center of the IP . However, a significant number of IP tumors are found in the maxillary sinus, which is a difficult site to biopsy in patients who have had no prior sinus surgery, and even in operated patients, obtaining biopsies from the anterior or lateral reaches of the sinus can be difficult in an awake patient.…”

“…Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that these tumors should be treated as de novo SCC. Furthermore, owing to the small number of patients studied, the prognostic factors and survival outcomes reported by a few retrospective studies are inconsistent . In this study, 120 treated patients with SCC originating from IPs were retrospectively analyzed with emphasis on the clinical behavior, risk factors, and oncologic outcomes.…”

“…The majority of the studies were retrospective analyses. A number of studies focused on surgical methods and were published in prominent otorhinolaryngology journals in 2015 and 2016 (61)(62)(63)(64). Notably, there were a limited number of experimental studies.…”
