Although accurate estimates of wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations are crucial for any effective resource management or pest control programme, this species is well-known to be difficult to monitor. We conducted a 10-year study in a fenced Mediterranean forest (Rome, Italy) to evaluate nocturnal line transect sampling performances. We focused on its accuracy in monitoring changes in density, which was independently estimated by capture-mark-resight (CMR) performed on counts at feeding sites. We carried out night surveys in the autumn of 2001-2010, using portable infrared cameras to detect animals. We sampled on foot to cover the whole study area and the different habitat types evenly. However, to ensure safe working conditions during night and to limit disturbance, we placed transects along paths and forest roads. Therefore, we investigated the potential impact of our convenience sampling on the detection process, using radiolocations of wild boars to assess their distribution with respect to selected transects. We found that our survey design should not have biased our estimates and that densities and coefficients of variations from line transect sampling were consistent with CMR results. Although labour-intensive, we believe that our approach can improve wild boar monitoring effectively, even in concealing habitats, providing decision makers with accurate estimates (and quantified confidence limits) which can help to develop the most appropriate management programme. Moreover, the current low price of new-generation infrared cameras can also increase strongly the cost-effectiveness of this method.

Abstract. Whether different sources of mortality are additive, compensatory, or depensatory is a key question in population biology. A way to test for additivity is to calculate the correlation between cause-specific mortality rates obtained from marked animals. However, existing methods to estimate this correlation raise several methodological issues. One difficulty is the existence of an intrinsic bias in the correlation parameter. Although this bias can be formally expressed, it requires knowledge about natural survival without any competing mortality source, which is difficult to assess in most cases. Another difficulty lies in estimating the true process correlation while properly accounting for sampling variation. Using a Bayesian approach, we developed a state-space model to assess the correlation between two competing sources of mortality. By distinguishing the mortality process from its observation through dead recoveries and live recaptures, we estimated the process correlation. To correct for the intrinsic bias, we incorporated experts' opinions on natural survival. We illustrated our approach using data on a hunted population of wild boars. Mortalities were not additive and natural mortality increased with hunting mortality likely as a consequence of non-controlled mortality by crippling loss. Our method opens perspectives for wildlife management and for the conservation of endangered species.

Összefoglalás.A vaddisznó a vadgazdálkodás számára jelentős bevételt jelent, szabadterületen állo-mánya folyamatosan nő; a vaddisznós kerti vadászat iránti igényeket mégis egyre nehezebb teljesíte-ni, habár a kertben lévő állományok nagy része befogásból származik. Ahhoz, hogy a pár napos vadá-szat során a kertet üzemeltetők biztosítani tudják a vendégek által "elvárt" nagy terítékű vadászatokat, nagy létszámban kell tartaniuk a vaddisznókat. Ez pedig sokszor nagy állománysűrűséggel is párosul, aminek oka a kis, általában 200 és 500 hektár közötti kiterjedésű terület. Zárt tartásban, legyen az vadászati célú kert, vagy hústermelést szolgáló farm, a speciális életkörülmények miatt az egyedek viselkedése meg fog változni a szabadterületi társaikhoz képest. A vizsgálat során szabadterületi és kerti állományok, kondák viselkedésbeli különbségeit vizsgáltuk egy táplálék-kompetíciós helyzetben, rá-világítva így azokra a lehetséges okokra, amelyek miatt a kertek többsége nem önfenntartó, az ottani szaporulat jelentős része elhullik. Az eredményeink alapján elmondható, hogy a vaddisznóskertben megnőtt az egyedek szociális interakciókkal töltött ideje, míg a táplálkozásra fordított idejük pedig jelentősen kevesebb volt. A kerti kocákat tekintve, jelentősen megnőtt agressziót figyelhettünk meg. Összességében elmondható, hogy a nagyobb állománysűrűség okozta stressz a malacokra volt jelentős hatással, mely negatív hatások azonban eddigi vizsgálataink eredményei és javaslataink alapján csökkenthetőek lennének.Kulcsszavak: szociális viselkedés, táplálék kompetíció, állatjólét, agresszió, vaddisznós kert. BevezetésA társas életet élő állatok körében a csoporton belül a fajra jellemző szociális rendnek kell kialakulnia, különben a közösség a legrövidebb időn belül felbomlana (MEYNHARDT 1986). A hierarchia a csoportban előre meghatározza az egyedek számára a források hasznosíthatóságát (HAGELSÖ GIERSING & STUDNITZ 1996) a rangsorban elfoglalt helyükhöz kötődő viselkedéselemek által (például fenyegetés, behódolás, elkerülés). Egy zárt kertben azonban a források végesek, ami pedig növeli az egyedek közötti kompetíciót (táplálék -a helytelen takarmányozásnak és nagy állománysűrűségnek köszönhetően a terület eltartóképessége folyamatosan csökken; búvóhely stb.), ez pedig szociális stresszt, agreszsziót válthat ki (HUGHES et al. 1997;MCGLONE 1985).
