Survival in Subcortical Vascular Dementia: Predictors and Comparison to Probable Alzheimer's Disease in a Tertiary Memory Clinic Population

Abstract: Background: Subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) is one of the most common dementias, after Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. Few survival analyses in SVaD patients have been reported. Methods: The dates and causes of death of 146 SVaD and 725 AD patients were included. We used the Cox proportional hazards model to compare survival between SVaD and AD patients and to explore possible factors related to survival of SVaD patients. Results: The median survival time after the onset of SVaD (109 months) was shorte… Show more

“…20 The lower mortality revealed in the current study may be associated with homogenous sample of participants (only patients with AD) since short survival is overrepresented in non-AD dementias like vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and AD dementia with concomitant cerebrovascular disease. 11,38,39 Moreover, in available reports, survival was evaluated both in treated and untreated, hospitalized, as well as institutionalized patients. 40,41 Since the treatment with ChEIs (treated as a group) prolongs the lifespan, individuals without treatment may have shorter survival.…”

“…Судинні ураження головного мозку є другою за частотою реєстрації причиною деменції після ХА у людей літнього та старечого віку. До інших типів деменції належать: фронтотемпоральна деменція, деменція з тільцями Леві, деменція при хворобі Паркінсона, деменція при хворобі Крейцфельдта -Якоба, при хворобі Гентінгтона, змішана тощо [10,23,39].…”

“…[2] Disease duration can be 15-26 years, encompassing preclinical to severe phases, with much of that time requiring partial to complete assistance from others [3][4][5][6][7]. Vascular dementia is the second most common (15-20%) type, often coexisting with AD [8][9][10], and dementia with Lewy bodies is the third most prevalent (4-16% of all cases) [11][12][13]. ADRD are among the most expensive health conditions in the US, with the 2018 estimated lifetime care cost being USD350,173 [3].…”
