Abstract: Autologous baboon RBCs isolated from clotted blood treated or not treated with urokinase and washed before transfusion have excellent survival and normal or only slightly reduced oxygen-transport function.

“…For the past 30 years our laboratory has been using the baboon in studies for assessing methods to disinfect, modify and preserve autologous red blood cells and platelets [1–10]. The study reported here was carried out to compare the in vivo survival of fresh, cryopreserved and liquid‐preserved platelets, and to evaluate the distribution of radioactivity over the spleen and liver to determine the site of removal of the non‐viable platelets.…”

“…The autotransfusion of a volume of plasma treated with urokinase or with urokinase and aprotonin equivalent to 15% of the blood volume did not produce a bleeding diathesis in these healthy baboons. The survival of the autologous baboon RBC in clotted blood treated with 10,000 units of urokinase has been shown to be excellent with normal or slightly reduced oxygen transport function 45 . The safety and therapeutic effectiveness of the nonwashed shed blood is dependent upon the quality and quantity of RBC and plasma that are reinfused.…”
