The energy efficiency and stability of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have always been a hot issue in the research. Clustering is a typical architecture for WSNs, and cluster heads (CHs) play a vital role. Unreasonable CH selection causes a lot of energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a competition-based unequal clustering multihop approach (CUCMA). CHs are selected by competition. First, the cluster radius (CR) of a node is calculated according to the distance to base station (BS). Then, CR is resized based on the number of around nodes. Only the nodes with high residual energy and appropriate distances to the selected CHs maybe become CHs, which are usually closer to the surrounding nodes. CUCMA and four related approaches are simulated in different scenarios. The results are analyzed, and it is proved that CUCMA balances the energy consumption of the CHs and reduces the energy consumption of the whole networks, thus leading to prolong the lifetime of WSNs.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are small devices that are run by batteries as minimal energy resources. The cluster method is one of the ways on WSN that is widely applied to the routing protocols to extend the network's lifespan. Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) is a cluster-based protocol proven to increase energy efficiency in sensor networks. However, LEACH also has disadvantages such as a selection of cluster heads that don't consider residual energy at every node. It is the cause of failure in the election process and affects the stability of the network cluster. Period network stability is essential as reliable feedback from a network. Therefore, this study tries to investigate and solve stability problems in the LEACH algorithm. In this paper, the authors propose a new protocol that is Optimization-LEACH (O-LEACH), which is the development of the LEACH protocol. The O-LEACH protocol cluster-head selection process is developed based on the initial energy of each node, and a new beginning energy levels calculated from each node to every round. The test results show that the proposed O-LEACH protocol has a better stability period and network lifetime than the LEACH protocol.

in WSN, clustering gives an effective way to enhance the network lifetime. Moreover It has been observed that the clustering algorithm utilizes the two main technique first is selection of cluster head and cycling it periodically in order to distribute the energy among the clusters and this in terms increases the lifetime of network. Another challenge comes with this is minimize the energy consumption. In past several algorithm has been proposed to increase the lifetime of the network and energy consumption, however these methodologies lacks from efficiency. In this paper, we have proposed a methodologies named as EE-CI (Energy Efficient Clustering using Interconnection), along with the random updation. Here the networks are parted into different clusters, the cluster updation are done based on the CHC scheme. Moreover, in proposed methodology cluster updation and data sample is determined through the change in sensor data. Here we propose a method for sampling sensor and CHC for selecting the cluster head to balance the energy and improvise the energy efficiency. Moreover, the proposed methodology is evaluated and the result is demonstrated by considering the Leach as existing methodology, experiments results shows that the proposed methodology outperforms the existing methodology.
